    2008 Candidates

So i was curious as to how things would work out with one of these quizzes. I have a few friends who told me they took it and it seems like these quizzes were favoring Obama. I dont think this is the same quiz since it didnt give me a percentage. But I took it, and I actually got Hillary.
So the fact that I was favoring her is really standing true. I think that anyone deciding their vote based on these quizzes should use due diligence and at least find a few different quizzes to make sure thaty they are not basing their vote on one biased quiz.
    Here are a few quizzes:

    5 Oceans???

Tonight I learned that there are 5 oceans.

I could have sworn that when I was in elementary school there were only 4 Oceans. To me, this was about as well known to me as there are 7 continents, 365 days in a year, 24 hours in a day, and 3 feet in a yard.

It turns out, when I was right. I learned correctly that there were 4 Oceans. The Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Arctic. BUT... in 2000 they added a new ocean. The Southern ocean is the ocean that surrounds Antarctica.
This new ocean ranks as the number 4th largest ocean in the world. The Pacific, Atlantic and Indian are 64, 33 and 28 million square miles respectively. The Southern is almost 8 million square miles and the arctic is 5. I feel like the 3 above were cheated out of area. Not that they need it, but they were all cheated out of at least 2 million quare miles. Imagine what a fit the world would have if there was a group one day that decided to remove 2 million milles from your continent and added it to a new one? They would protest. I protest on behalf of the Pacific (my favorite ocean).

    Excited!!

I am really excited. Josh and I leave next Tuesday, so I have enough time to pack and get ready... without having to run around like a crazy person yet. That is, assuming I decide to start packing... adn we all know how much I hate procrastination ;)
I got my camera. I finally ended up deciding on the Canon SD1000. It was hard to decide between the small cute canon with great picture quality and no image stabilization that had been out for just a month vs the Panasonic 10x optical zoom with image stabilization that had been out for over a year that was big for a pocket camera but small for that much zoom. I ended up with the small cute great photos becuase i decided that if I wanted a small camera, i may as well get the smallest. If I really wanted the zoom, I could go for the really nice cameras that have 12x zoom that were larger anyways. So instead of getting the in between zoom and size, i got the best of the small... and Josh at some point in the next 3 ears plans on getting the best of the big guys :) So I get the best fo both orlds eventually :)
Josh and I decided to also splurge on ourselves and get Nintendo DS Lites. It is such a fun cool console. We got 5 games... Tetris DS which is great alone and against people. Kirby Squeak Squad which only Josh has played to this point. New Super Mario Brothers which is just all around the most excellent because it has a bit of mario brothers and a bit of mario party :). Big Brain Academy which is an ok game, but has great multiplayer games and you can have up to 8 DSs playing together. And the best... Brain Age. This is basically why we bought the console :)
    YAY ITALY!!

    August

I dont like August. It is the worst month of all. I am not quite sure why i dislike it so much. Maybe it has to do with growing up and having vacations June-September. You may look at that set of dates and be like... um... Dana, you make no sense. but if you really think about it, I am right. (like always).
    Let me explain:
June is exciting becuase youre in school and youre all ready to be finished. Sometimes you took vacations right when school gets out so there was something exciting to do. Or maybe you even just slept in all morning and did nothing int he afternoons.
July is the month where you are not thinking about school at all anymore yet enjoying all yoru time in the sun, which is very beautiful. Maybe go out on the lake a bit. When I went to camp (6th-10th grades) then it was really fun. Camp was always a great time for me even if you did have to wake up and be ready for the day at 830am which you werent used to due to the month of June.
and then we get to the horrible month: August. By this time you are tired of the sun. Is not just hot, but now its stuffy too. You cant do anythign fun becuase you already have exhausted all the fun things to do in June and July. You start to think about school becuase you have to buy school supplies, and the weeks go by fast... but you dont want them to.
Most people would hate Sepptember but by this time you are ready to see all your friends everyday and go to your new classes... which were sometimes fun.
And there you have my dislike of the month August. bleh.

    Italy Photo Book

Recently my mom told me about this photo book though the costco photo center. I have heard of many online photobooks but usually they are very expensive. iPhoto was the first one I started playing around with once, but I got bored after knowing that I wasnt going to pay lots of money yet alone the more than $100 they wanted for it. So when my mom told me that she made 2 books for under 30 each, I was intrigued. I downloaded the program and started to play around. I decided to do my trip to Europe.
I started with my Italy excursions and those ended up being 60 pages. I hadnt even started on the other 7 countries I visited so I decided that I was going to make 2 seperate books beucase I and I didnt want 100 pages in a book.
Anyways... I finally got my Italy book in the mail and it turned out very good.

    Frustration

Do you ever get sick of certain people? Its weird how some people I can live with someone everyday and not get frustrated, yet see someone for a few hours a week and be like, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

    In Vino Veritas

This morning I was asked if there was such thing as a "Jewish Wedding" and whether or not drinking was allowed at these events. My answer was "yes, there is such thing as a jewsih wedding, and yes, alcohol is what the wedding is based off of" :) While this was my answer for weddings, I continued to delve into Jews and Alcohol
I went on saying that drinking is embedded in jews from the time a baby boy is born. AS part of the bris (the boy's foreskin removal ceremony) becuase they give the baby wine before cutting him. Then my friend said, I hope the rabbi doesnt drink. I responded, he does. After the cutting is done, everyone drinks whisky.
Then there is the passover holiday where everyone during the seder is suppoised to drink 5 glasses of wine even before they start the meal
Then there is Purim, where you are supposed to get so drunk that you should know the difference between the villian and the Hero of the holiday
I had learned in one of my classes at the UW that Jews invented the method in eastern europe to store grain in the form of alcohol becuase it lasted longer. This was not confirmed by my research on Wikipedia today. Apparently they are very into the arabic and islamic versions of the story. This seems to confuse me greatly... beucase I thought that the islamic religion was very against drinking......... hmmmmmmm......... ??????????
But anyways, apparently they had alcohol back in prehistoric times... and of course the greeks and romans had it.
IN VINO VERITAS! (in wine there is truth)

    Italy

As most of you know, I love Italy. I always talk about it, I know Italian, and always know the cheapest flight to Italy.<br>
I was watching TV with my mom last night and we were upset about the fact that Brothers nad SIsters was a repeat. So we were channel surfing and I saw this show called Ciao Italia! So I was like... hmm, lets watch this. I was on channel 12 and there was this older Italian woman and this other lady who runs the show. The older Italian lady was cooking and only speaking in Italian. The other lady was doing the translating what the Italian woman was saying. The translating lady would ask the woman cooking questions like, how many tomatoes, how long do you cook. She would keep getting answers like, depends on how many people you are having, or depends on how big the pan is. You just know. This was very amusing beucase I didnt like the lady. And... also becuase thats exactly the kinds of answers my great grandma would give. "You just know"<br>
I decided I liked the show, but not because of the lady who is normally on it, but because of the Italian lady. I think there should just be an Italian cooking show. <br>

Better yet, I should go to Italy, knock on someones door in the countryside and ask them to teach me to make traditional Italian food, from making my own pasta, to the yummy veal sauce they made. Mmmmm yummy. <br>

The lady translating didn’t even translate everything for people like my mom who was watching.

    White Lies?

Are white lies good or bad?
I know someone who is horrible at white lies. He is so anti lying that he wont even tell you your hair looks nice when you get it cut. He will not be negative about it, but will tell you exactly what he thinks. Is this a good trait?
My argument is that you should stretch the truth on things that will make someone feel better if they are not going to be made fun of by others for it. Like, if someone has their skirt tucked into their pantyhose and they ask you if they look good, dont just say, you look beautiful and go on, say, you look wonderful, but check your skirt. and dont say, you look ok but youve looked better, or i like you better not straight hair.
There is a point where being too honest can be a fault. opinions?

    I know a Mariner

Today I found out that Sean White got signed to the Seattle Mariners. He had previously been drafted to the Braves and went through their farm league teams, but now got traded to the Mariners to play Pro. That is so cool. If you dont know, Sean White is Ryans brother. If you dont know who Ryan is, he was my best friend from High School.

    5 shoes

I went to Brandon's house last niight for game night. I walked in the door to find one of my flip flops and a pair of my shoes. Then I took off the shoes I was wearing. I had 5 shoes at brandons... how does that happen? (Not Pairs Arty - all 5 total shoes)

    Weeeeeeeeeee!

Oh wait, not wee, but Wii! I got a Wii!
I was at an EB Games store in a small town near Josh's parents house called Lancaster (which i was ridiculed for by calling it as it is spelled, lan-caster. Them odd folk in the country say it like bank-aster.) I went to the front and asked if they had any Wiis. The lady was like, um, well we got 2 in and I think we sold one. I took that answer to actually mean yes. I called Justin to ask him if he wanted it because I remember him saying that he wanted one. It turns out he did want one, but not for Maggie as I had thought. I told him I go it and he said something that some other girl would be so excited, but that girl was not Maggie. It was going to be for Maggies friend. At that point I was like, if it is for my friends girlfriend then I would give it up, but not for my friends girlfriends friend. So I kept it for myself. I felt bad getting Justins hopes up, but all I can do is feel good that I would have given it up if Maggie wanted it.
Apparently there had been a sign up in the front that said out of stock, but not seeing it, I asked. Josh has started to learn from me that it never hurts to ask, becuase the worst thing that people are going to do is say no.
Now all I have to do is find Wii-Motes (controllers for those of you out of touch from the Wii) & Zelda.

    Accents

I havent blogged in a while, mostly beucase I dont have many new thoughts to share, and I have been kept a little more occupied at work.
Hmmm... Dana thoughts, Dana thoughts, come to me...
I finally got my first electric bill yesterday. Not only did I get my first, but they sent me two different ones. I got one that said sorry, this is your bill from June 30-Nov 22 for $99 and I got another that said this is your bill for June 30-Dec 2 for $91. thats odd I thought. I have to pay less for the longer amount of time? both working from the same meter? So then I tried logging onto their online system and alas, it didnt let me login. So now I have a bill, unsure of which to pay and I finally have to pay for my electricity that I used over 6 mths. Woo Hoo.
On anothher note, Josh says words funny. Ever wondered where you grew up or what your accent is? Well based on how you pronounce cot and caught, collar and caller, mary, marry and merry, fell and fill, don and dawn, and horrible, there is somehting that tells you! By golly me!
    It is quite amazing :)

    Traitor

There is a game called Shadows Over Camelot and I rule! This weekend we played at Josh's house 3 times. the first 2 times Josh was the traitor, and he was not so traitorous as one might expect ;). Marc then was our 3rd traitor of the day, and I exposed him after saeed wrongly accused me. Then, last night, in the midst of snow and flurry, play one game as the traitor and I win! I am awesome.
Speaking of awesome, I am awesome in fantasy football as well. As one might expect i won the weekdespite 5 guys combining for a total of 11 pts (Gado, Pittsburgh Defense, Harrison, Gonzalez and Branch) I had 2 guys that won the week for me. Tomlinson with 30 pts and Addai with 45. I do have to honor Hasselbeck with a very nice 19.5 pts despite 3 interceptions and a fumble lost.
Now I get to work, looking outside my window to some very nice ice and melting snow.

English v all the other languages

    English.
English to many is a very boring language. But really, if you think about it, it is the most interesting language of all. It may surprise many of you to hear that come from me, being that I love to speak and learn foreign languages.
    Why is english so interesting?
English is an ever-changing, ever-evolving language. English is so versatile, that you can change a noun to a verb by just changing the way you use it. Marketing is won by word that can do this. For example, Google. Google is a search tool that people use. They used to say, go to yahoo and search, or use a search engine. But now, its Google it. Google is now a verb, maybe not by websters or oxfords dictionary, but most people who know the internet will understand what you are saying. Google may not have had the best engine (though you could argue it is), MSN Search would never win that marketing campaign. I dont think I have ever heard someone say MSNsearch it. Now Microsoft have live search, which isnt great to make a verb, but possible at least. "Live it" works, but live can have so many different meanings, like, make that website go live which would mean, make it public.
Not only are these parts of speech changeable, but we can change any word into meaning around, about, like, near, kind of... all by adding an ish to the end. I dont know anyother language that lets you do that.
You may not realize it, but these changes happen all the time. As I was tying this blog entry, I was telling someone that I dont like beer, but I do like beerish type drinks. And most people know, that these mean those "girly drinks" that we all know and love.
If you want to know more english that may not be in the standard dictionaries... check out the urban dictionary by googling it!

    IM People

Do you have those people who you only chat with over IM? You know the person, but you havent seen them in so long that you just talk over IM sometimes. I have a few people like that.
What do you do when you run into them. You dont want to talk with them, but you know you probably should becuase you talk to them over IM all the time. Then, if you dont talk to them in person, they wont talk to you on IM and then you lose your IM buddy.
Its nothing against this person that you talk to only on IM, but its just kinda nice to talk to someone that you never see. I guess thats what it is like to have a pen pal in another country. You know youre not going to see them, but you can talk to them nonetheless.
Pen Pals. Thats what they are... IM Pen Pals.

    Credit Card Fraud

Usually this is a bad thing. But in this case it happened to not be so bad.
I have 2 credit cards from CitiBank. One that I use all the time, and one that I use at gas stations, drug stores, and supermarkets. The reason for card #2 gives me 5% cash back for those 3 types of stores. Unfortunatly about 3 months after getting card #2, they decided to change their rewards making the card crappy. Rather than the 5% cash back that I had signed up for, they decided to make it 2% and add in convenience stores and specific utilities. This was not useful for me becuase, 1, I dont buy things at convenience other than the occassional slurpee on a hot summer day, and b, the only utility company that I have charges me $1.50 to use my credit card, which on a $30 bill is 5% therefor I lose 3% by using my credit card. Now, $.90 isnt a lot, but why do it when its more convenient to pay the bill for free with online bill pay.
This has been bothering me for a bit because I wanted to cancel the card but since the account has been open for such a short amount of time, I thought it would look better on my credit to just leave it open and not use it. Not that its going to really make much of a difference in the long run. I hadnt decided on a new card that I wanted... so I left it alone and bought gas last night for my low 2% cash back.
Then last night I went to citi.com and checked the balance, due date and whatnot for card #1. I did all that, paid my bill, and since I was already logged in, went to look at the other card. To my surprise there was a big red notice that says please call custome service due to high risk activity to your card. I was like... I bough $35 worth of gas in kirkland, what is so high risk about that. So i proceeded to call them and found out that there were 3 other charges to the card as well. 2 charges from an international clothing store @ maxx.com, one for $200 some and the other for $39. and 1 charge at some other international clothing store for $428. Luckily 2 of those charges were denied, but of course, the $400 one went through. I dont have to do much, just sign an affidavit, get it notarized, and send it back in to citi. The upside of this is that they have to cancel the card. They were going to re-apply me for the same card and send me a new one with a new nubmer, but i was like, can you just close it and not send me a new one? The answer fo course was yes, so this bad thing of fraud worked out well for me becuase it relieved my dilemma of whether or not to keep the card open.
The only thing left to bother me is... how did someone get my credit card number. Now, as we went over before, its not a card that I use frequently, or in restraunts that someone could have time to take down the number. I have the card in my posession still... so how did the number get out?
    The world will never know.
    damn.
Now the next thing is to figure out what card do I get to replace that one. I am in no rush since I still have my other citi card which I love, but I like having 2 cards.
Chase has a new card which gives you 3% cash back at gas stations, supermarkets, drugstores, and fast food places (incl coffe houses and taco places) which are a big chunk of my purchases. The only thing about that card, is that it is very ugly.
The other one dangling in the back of my mind is the Alaska Airlines card too. That card it just ok, but the companion fare is golden. GOLDEN! I just have to do it one day... I know I do... but... hrmph.
    3% or AA?
    votes please.
